We have chosen a family here in great need for the $1,000 donation. It is a family of five; parents and three young girls. The dad makes $8 a day and sometimes cannot find work everyday. They have one twin bed for all of them in a tiny room that is smaller than my office. They do not have a roof at all on over most of the home. The roof over their sleeping and cooking area is made of pieces of corrugated tin with holes throughout. When it rains they get drenched. They do not have any doors or windows or plumbing.
We are using the funds to hire a couple of masons to complete the incomplete walls of the home. We have paid for cement blocks, cement, gravel, sand and rebar. We went to the shop and bought wood for the concrete frames. A carpenter has been hired to finish the roof. We are currently getting prices for the roof sheets and wood for the roof.
We discussed doing the work ourselves but felt it would be more helpful to the locals to hire them. We may be short a few hundred but will make the shortage up between ourselves. Anoma is also pitching in with some of the costs as a donation to the cause.
Our goal to have it done by the time we leave.
Brain, Dave and Gord and I collectively bought, with our own funds, school supplies and toys for the girls. They have nothing!
I want to let you know that the dad is so very grateful and was in tears for this gift. He is a working man but without these funds from local 1286, he would NEVER have gained the resources to put a room over his family's head.
